How SR Electrical Delivers Safer Systems for Hydrogen Infrastructure

Wednesday 20 August

By 2030, the UK aims to produce up to 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen, enough to power entire cities and decarbonise transport, industry, and heating. This ambitious target is part of the country's broader efforts to transition to a more sustainable, low-emission economy.

Behind every hydrogen pump, pipe and panel lies a critical challenge: managing electrical risks in one of the most volatile environments on earth.

Hydrogen may be clean, but it is highly flammable. With an ignition energy ten times lower than petrol vapour, even minor oversights in electrical design can lead to major consequences.

Real-world Projects, Real-world Risks

At hydrogen sites, hazardous area lighting is crucial to eliminate ignition sources, comply with regulations, protect workers, and ensure uninterrupted operations. Investing in certified lighting systems is not just a safety measure, it’s a regulatory and operational necessity.

We recently delivered a series of hazardous area lighting projects across operational hydrogen sites:

  • Hydrogen Dispensing Area – Supplied and installed Zone 1 hazardous area lighting to ensure safe illumination during hydrogen dispensing. Luminaires were installed to meet ATEX requirements for a refuelling environment.
  • Hydrogen Process Plant Room – Provided and installed ATEX-rated lighting within a plant room used in the hydrogen generation process. The system ensured full compliance while maintaining normal operations.
  • Hydrogen Generation Site – Installed Zone 2 lighting to support safe operation during out-of-hours hydrogen production, delivered with minimal disruption to ongoing site activity.

This work forms part of our growing portfolio of hydrogen projects, where we apply specialist knowledge to deliver safe, compliant lighting in areas classified for gases.

The Importance of CompEx Qualified Teams in Hydrogen Infrastructure

As more contractors enter the hydrogen space, we are seeing a rise in ATEX awareness, but experience still matters. In high-risk environments, even small oversights can have serious consequences.

That is why you should always work with a CompEx qualified team who combine technical compliance with real-world understanding. Whether it is for a single facility or a multi-site rollout, hydrogen infrastructure demands careful planning and proven expertise.
